AARBF Burn Bulletin September 2009
Little Heroes Preschool Burn Camp is a burn recovery program designed for preschool burn survivors, ages three to 6 years old and their families. The Firefighters Burn Institute offers all the funding and many volunteers for the Camp, and it gathered three partners to assist in different areas. AARBF supplies referrals and volunteers and Survivor Providers Coordinator Carloyn Falkenberg attends as a preschool counselor. The Taylor Family Foundation gives Camp Arroyo in Livermore to host the event, and Shriners Hospitals for Kids of Northern California offers referrals and a few knowledgeable session and volunteer burn care professionals and the camp's co-director. Alisa Ann Ruch Burn Basis (AARBF) sponsors camps and other packages for burn survivors.
Three parallel applications make up a unique camp where families are able to play, giggle, and be taught. The Preschool Program focuses on wholesome emotional and bodily restoration by remedy play and socialization with different burn survivors. Siblings are recognized as essential and distinctive supporters to their burn survivor brother or sister.
The grownup program assists caregivers with the tasks of nurturing a child who has suffered a severe burn damage, and the sibling program offers therapeutic leisure activities for older kids and daycare for younger children. After an amazingly successful first year (the program gained an American Burn Affiliation award), the second annual Little Heroes Preschool Burn Camp will likely be held September 25-27, 2009. Each year, roughly one hundred thirty kids attend this camp at Marvel Valley in Sanger, Calif.
The Firefighters Burn Institute is a non-revenue 501(c)(three) group based by Sacramento Fire Captain Cliff Haskell and the Sacramento Area Firefighters Local 522 in 1973, for the purpose of building a neighborhood burn therapy facility; offering restoration packages for burn survivors; providing hearth and burn prevention through public schooling; funding training for burn group professionals, firefighters, and burn survivors; and supporting burn remedy and rehabilitation research.
The Adult Program assists parents and caregivers by providing the help and schooling essential to nurture a child who has suffered a severe burn damage.
